Reflux Disease

Reflux disease is a malady which affects millions of people world wide.  It is often called the plague of the 21st century.  Reflux disease is a condition in which excessive production of hydrochloric acid is regurgitated back from the stomach up into the esophagus through the LES, or lower esophageal sphincter.  The LES is the natural valve that keeps stomach contents in the stomach and out of the esophagus. When working properly, this important valve operates like a door, letting food into the stomach but not back up into the esophagus . The esophagus is also known as swallowing tube. Common symptoms of acid reflux disease are heartburn, chest pain, difficulty in swallowing, regurgitation, asthma, dental erosion etc.

Most commonly, reflux disease occurs due to poor diet and eating habits.  In this case food in the stomach is partially digested by acid. This partially digested acidic food is delivered to the small intestine for further digestion. If you are suffering form acid reflux disease, acid travels backwards into swallowing tube. It can cause GRED (gastro esophageal reflux disease). When this occurs acid reflux disease can seriously affect your health.

Reflux disease increases the risk of esophageal cancer.  Barrett's esophagus, a condition marked by an abnormal lining of the esophagus that develops in response to acid injury, is a precursor to esophageal cancer.  Studies indicate that this condition may be linked to an increased risk of cancer of the esophagus.

The most common cause of reflux disease is excessive consumption of spicy food, excessive consumption of alcohol, caffeine, excessive smoking, overeating, extreme consumption of fatty food, eating just before sleeping etc. It is also known as hyperchlorhydria in medical science. Acid reflux disease can be treated by changing one's diet and eating habits.  Chewing food well is important.  If one suffers from reflux disease, one should also eat in a quiet, peaceful atmosphere.  There are many natural remedies and cures for acid reflux disease.  Drugs which reduce stomach acid have many harmful side effects.  Natural herbs and remedies are the best way to treat acid reflux disease.
