ACID REFLUX TREATMENT

The treatment of acid reflux can be either allopathic or holistic in nature.  Modern Western medicine approaches the treatment of acid reflux in a manner which only treats the symptoms.  This is done primarily with the use of over the counter and prescription of drugs.

Antacids, which neutralize stomach acids, contain various combinations of magnesium, calcium, or aluminum.  H2 blocker drugs, which are also sold over the counter, block the action of histamine on the parietal cells in the stomach thereby decreasing the production of digestive acid  PPI drugs (proton pump inhibitors) actually shut down the proton pumps which manufacture acid in the stomach.

Other treatments for acid reflux include natural, holistic and alternative forms.  These include the use of herbs and herbal formulas, plant extracts, behavior modification and any other course of treatment not associated with pharmacology.

Behavior modification could include weight loss, wearing loose clothing, chewing food completly and exercise.  It also would be concerned with what one eats.

Natural treatment for acid reflux should be attempted first before resorting to the use of durgs, which often have harmful side affects.
